MVBA Results

PANABO CITY – PacMan-General Santos of boxing champion Manny Pacquiao completed a remarkable comeback to steal the win from Montana Pawnshop-Davao, 86-78, and grab solo second place in the ML Kwarta Padala Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) First Conference at the Panabo City Stadium Wednesday evening (March 22).

Trailing for three and a half periods, PacMan poured it on in the final canto behind guard Louie Medalla who scored all of his 10 markers in that crucial stage of the game. Montana led, 73-69, until Medalla, Jaypee Locsin and Apol Coronado powered a crushing 12-0 run that slowly ate into the lead, highlighted by Medalla tying the game for the first time with a free throw split off Christ Coquilla at the 6:13 mark, 73-73. Medalla then broke the tie with a basket, 75-73, and 4:50 to play. After the run, PacMan found themselves ahead by eight, 81-73, with four minutes to play.

Dado Ayson quickly knocked in Montana's final field goal, 75-81. From there, PacMan hung tough with Locsin adding two free throws off Philip Butel and Medalla draining a triple with 46 seconds left to settle the final tally and raise PacMan's win-loss card to 3-2. Montana dropped to 2-3.

Fatigue got the better of Montana, who suited only ten players for their first home game in the league backed by ML Kwarta Padala, Panasonic, Nature's Spring Drinking Water, Molten and Sulpicio Lines. Coach Dodong Cagampang sorely missed the services of center Mark Legarde, forward Jeff Bajenting and guard Avel Guno who suffered various ailments.

Still, Montana put up a gallant stand before the big crowd that included Panabo City Mayor Rey P. Gavina and team owner Armando Quibod. Inspired by their presence, Montana raced to a 20-4 start behind guard Allan Quibod and forwards Mark Bonifacio and Linde Dawal en route to taking the first period, 30-20. PacMan then proceeded to slowly chip into Montana's lead behind the good games of Locsin, Coronado and Dondon Tadena.

Tadena and Locsin led all scorers with 18 points, followed by Coronado with 15. Ayson topped Montana with 13 markers followed by Bonifacio and Dawal with 12 apiece.

Sizzling MVBA action resumes Friday (March 24) at the Lagao Gym with PacMan aiming for its second straight win when they host Pryce Pharma-Misamis Oriental of MVBA Chairman Gov. Oscar Moreno starting at 5:30PM. PacMan trounced Pryce, 86-78, last February 26 in Iligan City and aims to score a repeat this time in front of their home fans.

Pryce Pharma boasts of certified scoring threats Dondon Mendoza and Jesson Alfeche, who both average 13.7 points per game and Christopher Carretas (10.3 PPG). A big plus is the arrival of guard Ramil Tagupa, who came up with six points and eight assists in leading Pryce to their first win last March 11 over Montana, 82-75, at the Xavier University Gym.
